    Whether you're recovering from a sports injury, surgery, or a muscle strain, what you eat can dramatically influence how quickly and completely you heal. Nutrition is often overlooked in rehabilitation plans, yet it provides the raw materials your body needs to repair tissue, manage inflammation, and restore strength.

    The Phases of Healing

    Recovery isn't a single event — it's a process with distinct nutritional demands at each stage:

    Phase 1: Inflammation (Days 1-5)

    Contrary to popular belief, acute inflammation is necessary for healing. During this phase, your body sends immune cells to the injury site to clear damaged tissue and initiate repair. Nutritional priorities:

    • Omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds help regulate (not suppress) the inflammatory response
    • Vitamin C supports immune function and collagen synthesis — load up on citrus, bell peppers, and berries
    • Zinc from pumpkin seeds, meat, and shellfish accelerates wound healing

    Phase 2: Proliferation (Days 5-21)

    New tissue is being built rapidly. This is the most nutritionally demanding phase:

A significant injury can increase your basal metabolic rate by 15-50%. Undereating slows recovery, promotes muscle loss, and impairs immune function.

    Over-Relying on Anti-Inflammatory Supplements

    While turmeric, fish oil, and tart cherry juice have anti-inflammatory properties, aggressively suppressing inflammation during the acute phase can actually delay healing. Use these strategically, particularly during the later stages of recovery.

    Neglecting Gut Health

    If you've been prescribed antibiotics or pain medication, your gut microbiome may be disrupted. Include probiotic-rich foods (kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi) and prebiotic fibre (garlic, onions, asparagus) to maintain digestive health, which directly impacts nutrient absorption and immune function.

    Breakfast: Three-egg omelette with spinach and smoked salmon, sourdough toast, orange juice
    Mid-morning: Greek yoghurt with mixed berries, walnuts, and honey
    Lunch: Chicken and avocado salad with quinoa, mixed seeds, and olive oil dressing
    Afternoon snack: Collagen peptides blended into a smoothie with banana and peanut butter
    Dinner: Grilled mackerel with sweet potato, steamed broccoli, and bone broth soup
